Privacy policy
Your running data stays yours.
This policy explains what the Aera app for iPhone and Apple Watch does with your information, and separately what this website does. Tech With Nikola Ltd is the controller for both.
At a glance
- Aera has no accounts. Your plan, runs, routes and settings are stored on your iPhone and Apple Watch, not on an Aera server.
- Apple Health and location are optional and controlled by the permissions you grant in iOS.
- Apple processes payments. RevenueCat verifies your membership using a random identifier, never your name or email.
- In-app usage analytics (Mixpanel) run only after you tap Allow analytics, and never include your training data.
- This website uses Google Analytics only if you allow it, and is served by Cloudflare.
- Questions or requests: nikola@techwithnikola.com.
Who we are
Tech With Nikola Ltd (company number 15244741, registered office Flat 705, 4 Hawthorne Crescent, London, SE10 9GN, United Kingdom) makes Aera and runs runwithaera.com. We are the controller responsible for the personal information described here. Part one covers the app; part two covers the website. The remaining sections apply to both.
Part one: the Aera app
Your training data stays on your devices
Aera creates and stores your running plan, preferences, fitness estimates, status and time away, workout history and recorded routes on your iPhone. There is no Aera account, no sign-in and no Aera server that receives this information. It is not sent to RevenueCat or Mixpanel. Your iPhone backup settings determine whether Apple includes Aera's local data in device backups.
Your iPhone and a paired Apple Watch exchange workout information directly, using Apple's device-to-device connection, so that you can run with your Watch and sync completed sessions back to your phone. This stays between your own devices.
Apple Health
With your permission, Aera reads running-related information from Apple Health: workouts, walking and running distance, heart rate, step count, active energy and workout routes. It uses recent running history to estimate your current ability and to show completed runs in your history. You can complete onboarding without granting Health access by entering a recent result or choosing a starting point.
When you record a run, Aera asks for permission to save the workout, its distance, active energy and route to Apple Health, and reads heart rate and other workout statistics during the session. Apple Health data is used only on your devices for these purposes. We never receive it, and we do not use it for advertising or analytics. Manage access at any time in the Health app under your profile, Apps and Services, or in Settings. Removing Aera's local data does not remove workouts already saved to Apple Health.
Location and maps
Aera uses your iPhone's location during an outdoor run, including while the app is in the background, to measure distance and pace and to record the route. Location stays on your device and in the workout saved to Apple Health if you allow that. Apple Maps displays your routes; Apple's map service receives the map requests needed to draw them under Apple's privacy policy.
Membership and payments
Apple processes subscription payments through your Apple Account. Aera never sees your payment card or bank details. Apple's handling of your purchase is described in Apple's privacy policy.
We use RevenueCat to verify your membership, restore purchases and report on subscriptions. RevenueCat receives purchase and subscription information: the product bought, transaction identifiers, purchase, renewal and expiry dates, trial and membership status, and technical details needed to run its service such as the app and operating-system version. Aera identifies you to RevenueCat with a randomly generated identifier. We do not provide your name, email address, advertising identifier, training information, Health data or routes. Automatic device-identifier collection and RevenueCat's optional diagnostics are turned off. See RevenueCat's privacy policy.
Optional usage analytics (Mixpanel)
Aera asks whether you will allow anonymous usage analytics. Nothing is sent, and the analytics software is not even started, unless you choose Allow analytics. Declining does not limit the app.
If you allow analytics, Aera sends three kinds of event to Mixpanel: completing onboarding, updating your plan (whether by changing preferences or starting a replacement plan) and completing a workout (from iPhone or Apple Watch). Events never include your training goal, race details, fitness numbers, distances, durations, paces, routes, heart rate, status or notes. Each event carries a random installation identifier generated by Mixpanel, a platform label, and technical context the Mixpanel software attaches automatically, such as app version and build, iOS version, device model, screen size and network type. Mixpanel's automatic event tracking and IP-based geolocation are turned off, we do not create user profiles, and we do not use advertising identifiers or use this information for advertising. Mixpanel stores the data in the United States.
Turn analytics off at any time in More → About & privacy. This stops new events; it does not automatically delete events Mixpanel has already received. Erasing Aera's data resets your consent choice and gives the installation a fresh identifier. To request deletion of analytics data, contact us; because the data is keyed by a random identifier we may need information from your device to find it. See Mixpanel's privacy policy.
Notifications
After you start a free trial, Aera offers a local reminder two days before the trial ends. It is scheduled on your iPhone and sent by iOS; no notification service of ours is involved.
Bug reports and support
More → Help & feedback → Report a bug prepares a report on your device containing your description and technical details such as app version, operating system and device model. A screenshot and additional diagnostics are included only if you choose. You decide whether and how to share the report, for example by email.
If you contact us, we receive the message, attachments and contact details you send, and use them to respond and to investigate the issue. Review attachments before sending, especially if they show health or location information. Our email is provided by Google Workspace.
Your choices in the app
- Apple Health and location permissions: Health app and Settings on your iPhone.
- Analytics: More → About & privacy → Allow analytics.
- Local data: More → Erase all Aera data removes your plan, fitness, history and settings from that iPhone. Workouts saved to Apple Health and your subscription are managed separately.
- Subscription: Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your iPhone, or More → Membership.
Part two: this website
Hosting
runwithaera.com is served by Cloudflare, Inc. To deliver pages and protect the site from abuse, Cloudflare processes connection details such as your IP address, the page requested, browser type and the time of the request, and may set a cookie needed for security challenges. We do not run our own server logs; we see only aggregated traffic statistics from Cloudflare. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
Google Analytics, only with your consent
We would like to know how many people visit this site and how many go on to the App Store. We use Google Analytics 4 for this, and only after you choose Allow analytics in the banner. Until then no analytics script loads and no analytics cookie is set. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal we treat it as a decline and do not show the banner.
If you allow analytics, Google sets cookies named _ga and _ga_ followed by a code, which last up to two years and hold a random identifier for your browser. Google receives standard events such as page views, scrolling and outbound clicks, our own event recording clicks on the App Store link, the pages you view, the referring site, approximate location derived from your IP address at the country or city level, and your browser and device type. Google Analytics 4 does not store your IP address. We have turned off Google Signals and advertising features, we do not link Google Analytics to Google Ads, and we keep event-level data for the shortest retention period Google offers. The data is processed by Google LLC in the United States under the Google Ads Data Processing Terms. See Google's privacy policy and how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
Change your choice at any time with the Analytics settings link in the footer. Declining after allowing stops further measurement in this browser and removes the analytics cookies we can reach.
Links and email
This site links to the App Store, Apple's legal pages and our providers' policies, which are governed by their own terms. If you email us from the site, part one's section on support applies.
Why we process information
- Providing the membership you buy (performance of a contract, and legal and accounting obligations): subscription records processed by Apple and RevenueCat.
- Answering support requests and keeping the app and site reliable and secure (our legitimate interests): support emails, bug reports you choose to share, and Cloudflare's security processing.
- Optional analytics in the app and on the website (your consent): you can refuse without losing anything, and withdraw consent at any time without affecting earlier lawful processing.
- Features that depend on your permissions (your choice in iOS): Apple Health, location and Apple Watch. Declining limits only the features that need them.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. We do not make decisions about you based solely on automated processing that have legal or similarly significant effects.
Providers and international transfers
| Provider | Used for | Location and safeguards |
|---|---|---|
| Apple | App Store distribution, payments, Apple Health, Maps, device-to-device Watch sync | Apple acts under its own privacy policy for the services you use. |
| RevenueCat | Membership verification and subscription reporting | United States. Data Processing Addendum with standard contractual clauses and the UK addendum. |
| Mixpanel | Optional in-app analytics | United States. Data Processing Addendum; EU–US Data Privacy Framework with UK extension, standard contractual clauses and UK addendum. |
| Cloudflare | Website hosting and protection | Global network, headquartered in the United States. Data Processing Addendum; EU–US Data Privacy Framework. |
| Website analytics (with consent) and our email service | United States. Ads Data Processing Terms and Google Workspace terms; EU–US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses. |
Information processed by these providers may be transferred outside the United Kingdom and the European Economic Area, including to the United States, under the safeguards above. Contact us for more detail about any of them.
How long we keep information
- Training data stays on your devices until you erase it or delete the app. Device backups follow your Apple backup settings.
- Subscription records are kept for as long as needed to provide and restore your membership, resolve billing disputes and meet legal and accounting requirements.
- Support messages and bug reports are kept while needed to resolve the request, understand related faults and handle follow-up or legal claims.
- In-app analytics are kept while useful for understanding and improving the app, subject to Mixpanel's settings and any deletion request. Withdrawing consent stops new events but does not erase earlier ones automatically.
- Website analytics use Google's shortest event retention, currently two months, and aggregated reports after that.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or restrict the personal information we hold, to receive a portable copy, to object to processing based on our legitimate interests, and to withdraw consent. UK and EU residents have these rights under the UK GDPR and the GDPR; California residents have similar rights under the CCPA, and we honour Global Privacy Control signals on this website. We do not sell or share personal information.
To exercise a right, email nikola@techwithnikola.com. Because the app has no accounts and uses random identifiers, we may need information from your device to find the relevant records, and we may ask you to verify your request. You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office or your local data-protection authority; you do not have to contact us first.
Children
Aera is a membership product for runners who manage their own training and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, and because the app has no accounts we hold no profile that could identify a child. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes
We will update this policy when Aera or this website changes. The date at the top identifies the current version. Significant changes to how the app handles your information will be explained in the app before they take effect.
